Handling of Enron issue is politically-motivated: Rane

Mumbai, May 16: THE democratic front (DF) government’s handling of Enron imbroglio was "politically motivated", opposition leader in the state assembly Narayan Rane alleged on Tuesday.

He also said that thousands would be rendered jobless if the US energy giant-promoted Dabhol Power Company (DPC) winds up its operation in coastal Konkan.

‘‘The renegotiating committee was doing little to bring down the power tariff and the chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was targetting NCP president Sharad Pawar through his actions,” Rane said in a statement here.
It was Mr Pawar, the then chief minister, who signed the agreement with Enron in 1993. ‘‘If DPC power tariff is exorbitant, then Deshmukh should have initiated discussions with Enron to reduce it for the benefit of common man,” the opposition leader said.

‘‘If the chief minister thinks Enron deal was signed in an improper manner then why is he shying away from ordering a probe or instituting a judicial committee, as demanded by left allies. (PTI)
