Tax exemption sought on health insurance policies
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, March 26: The Eradi Committee, which has studied the taxation aspects of the life insurance sector, has asked the government not to tax the surplus income of health insurance policy holders (of life insurance companies) since general insurance policy holders enjoyed tax exemption. "There were strong arguments for not assessing policy holders' share of surplus in the health insurance business as similar policies issued by general insurance firms were exempted," committee chairman VU Eradi said. At present, the surplus income of health insurance policy holders is taxed at 12.5 per cent.Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
