New Delhi, March 18: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has suggested the government to prepare a master plan for the growth of the civil aviation sector.CII has said that the master plan should provide over-arching policy direction, prioritizing the airports and facilitating investments.
"Such a master plan should provide clearly which major airports will be developed as key international hubs. And to begin with, not more than 2-3 airports, should operate as truly international airports in the country," CII said.
CII also called for firm deadlines for implementation of the category IIIA landing aid systems at key airports and strict control by Airports Authority of India on urban development around airports.
Describing international air services as most critical to spur tourism growth in the country, CII put forward the suggestion of liberalized bilaterals and speedier privatisation of Air India, with a view to restoring the airlines on a rapid growth path. The aim is to tackle the massive imbalance in the demand supply scenario for international passengers to and from India. CII National Committee of Civil Aviation has presented the reform agenda for development and growth of air services to Civil avaition secretary AH Jung his senior colleagues, including the Airports Authority of India chirman and the director general of DGCA on Tuesday. Forecasting a growth of 8-9 per cent growth in passenger traffic in the next 10 years, the CII report reveals that this would mean the current level of about 36 million international and domestic passengers was likely to reach a figure of 70 to 110 million by 2010.
Opening up of the civil aviation sector, to some extent, provided the choice to customers on trunk routes, but had failed to push the growth in aviation services. The need of the hour was to deregulate the domestic air services which would stimulate growth of regional airlines operations, thereby connecting areas which are remote, need economic development.
