Plea for closer ties between rubber-producing nations

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Kochi, March 15 : The Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC) secretary general, Gnoh Chong Hock, on Thursday stressed the need for closer cooperation between rubber-producing countries to achieve better prices for natural rubber.

Speaking at the 23rd session of the ANRPC here, Hock said'we should consolidate our efforts with a singular mind to achieve fairer prices for natural rubber if we are to protect and promote the welfare of small farmers'.

``The rubber industry goes through boom and bust cycles. But in the last four years, developments beyond the control of producing countries had kept prices low. Appropriate measurers have still not been found to address the situation'', he said. The slowing down of US economy, had its repercussions in the economies of producing countries. This had led to competition among member countries. The effect of globalisation among other things had promoted mergers and JVs. Giving examples, he said major companies like Goodyear and Sumitomo Rubber Industries have jointly launched a website through which they might purchase rubber. This type of consolidation could create staggering power, he said.

However, the producing countries should take a leaf out of such JVs and strengthen co-operation , as far as supply was concerned, he added.
