Dell to ship Itanium-based servers by mid-2001

New Delhi: Dell, a direct computer systems company, will be launching its Intel Itanium processors-based servers worldwide by the middle of this year.

The Itanium servers will be launched by Dell in two versions based on the speed of the processors.

This was disclosed by Mr Geoff Healey, director, enterprise business, Asia Pacific while talking to The Financial Express on the sidelines of a Dell media conference to announce the launch of a suite of enterprise products.

Mr Healey said that the Itanium server will be the top of the line enterprise product of Dell and will cater to the high-end market, hungry for speed and performance. The company will initially launch two Itanium-based products followed by others spread across a two year road map. Dell has announced the launch of a range of enterprise products in the Indian market.

The latest suite of enterprise products include the general purpose server - PowerEdge 350 and PowerEdge 1550, application servers - PowerApp.web 110 and PowerApp.web 120 and Storage Area Network (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS) products. "The rollout of these enterprise server and storage products broadens the scope of our enterprise offerings as well as underscores our commitment to the Indian market," said Mr Healey.

Talking about PowerEdge general purpose servers, he said that the products are rack dense servers that offer customers the choice between 1U server with performance and expandability and a 1U cost effective server for infrastructure. The PowerEdge 1550 and PowerEdge 350 are priced at Rs 1.47 lakh and Rs 90,000, respectively.

The PowerApp.web are turnkey Web server appliances that can be deployed in minutes running either on IIS 5.0 or Linux Apache 1.3.12. The appliances are suitable for Internet and application service providers, hosting companies and dotcoms. The PowerApp.web 110 and PowerApp.web 120 are priced at Rs 97,000 and Rs 1.48 lakh respectively.

Dell has also introduced two NAS systems. The PowerVault 735N is engineered around the Windows operating system and include support for Windows, Netware, Unix, Linux and Macintosh clients. The unit provides four 36 GB data disk drives and is scalable up to 1.44 TBs. The product is priced at Rs 7.3 lakh. The other version of NAS, PowerVault 701N is suitable for small business and offer 60 GB capacity.
