Karnataka govt to help weavers via cooperatives

Bangalore, March 12 : The Karnataka government has proposed to extend assistance to 17,000 handloom weavers through cooperative societies, as was being done in the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, Textiles Minister M Mahadevappa said on Monday.The weavers had been facing financial problems for the last three to four months as 50 per cent share of the market development assistance (MDA) given by the Centre was stopped last year, (the remaining 50 per cent is given by the state) the minister said, replying to a question by BJP leader, Dr MR Tanga in the legislative council.
