Win-win all the way for consumers

Want to buy a new car? Do it now! Following the FM's budget announcement of an 8 per cent reduction in excise duty, car manufacturers are vying with one another to pass on the relief to consumers and send their sales graphs zooming up.

Most car and two-wheeler companies have announced an across the board cut in the prices of their various models. General Motors India Ltd has announced price cuts ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 48,000 across all Corsa and Astra models. The Opel Corsa 1.4 GLF will now cost Rs 5,60,896, the 1.6 GSI Rs 6,23,724 and the 1.6 Royale Rs 6,85,608. The Opel Astra Advantage is available for Rs 7,15,904, and the Astra GLI and Club for Rs 8,04,664 and Rs 9,25,456 (ex-showroom Delhi), respectively.

Market leader Maruti Udyog has also announced price reductions of Rs 11,000-42,000 in all its vehicles. Maruti 800 will now cost Rs 2,06,117, the EX and DX models Rs 2,35,774 and Rs 2,54,446, respectively. The Alto LX and VX are available for Rs 2,90,150 and Rs 3,52,090, while the Esteem LX and VX are now priced at Rs 4,79,553 and Rs 5,31,038, respectively. The Omni (eight-seater and five-seater FR) has come down to Rs 2,22,895 and Rs 2,17,256. The Wagon R LX is more affordable at Rs 3,25,891, and the Baleno Sedan is now pegged at Rs 7,19,444 (all ex-showroom Delhi).

Daewoo Motors India Ltd says it has trimmed the prices of all its cars, effective March 1. The Matiz SS will now cost Rs 2,89,139 in Delhi and Rs 3,05,481 in Mumbai; the SD, SG, SA models will now be more affordable at Rs 3,21,155, Rs 3,40,248 and Rs 3,82,743 (ex-showroom Delhi) and Rs 3,40,496, Rs 3,56,590 and Rs 4,05,685 (ex-showroom Mumbai), respectively. Daewoo will also pass on the benefits of the price reduction to customers who booked or bought Matiz between February 5 and 25 under the Suraksha Samadhan scheme.

Under this scheme, all customers will be paid back the extra money they paid in anticipation of an excise cut.

Hyundai Motors India Ltd has effected a Rs 19,000-37,673 price cut, but effective March 3. HMIL has passed a huge chunk of the excise benefit announced in the budget to its consumers. The Santro GS will bear a price tag of Rs 3,88,155, the Santro LE Rs 3,25,214 and the Santro LS Rs 3,65,234. The Hyundai Accent GLS will now cost Rs 6,04,219, instead of Rs 6,38,589. And the top end model, the Accent GLX, which used to cost Rs 6,99,000, is nearly Rs 40,000 cheaper at Rs 6,61,322.

Honda Siel Cars India has also slashed its prices substantially. Consumers get a benefit of between Rs 27,000 and Rs 39,000 here. The Honda City 1.3 LXi is now Rs 6,31,263 in Delhi and Rs 6,72,600 in Mumbai. Ex-showroom prices of 1.5 EXi, 1.5 EXi'S and Honda VTEC are Rs 7,96,997, Rs 8,45,505 and Rs 8,95,133 (ex-showroom Delhi) and Rs 8,41,257, Rs 8,88,083 and Rs 9,43,320, respectively. Ford's gesture towards the consumer falls in the range of Rs 29,000 to Rs 40,000 for the Ikon. The Ford Ikon 1.3 CLXi will now cost Rs 4,94,749, the 1.3 EXi (petrol) Rs 5,52,344.The 1.6 ZXi (petrol with fog lamps) costs Rs 6,09,541, the 1.6 ZXi (petrol without fog lamps) Rs 6,05,280. The 1.6 SXi (petrol) and 1.8 ZXi (diesel without fog lamps) now cost Rs 6,70,718 and Rs 6,72,787, respectively. Hindustan Motors has announced a Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 cut in prices across all its variants.

The Lancer GLXi D now costs Rs 9,34,649, the petrol version, Rs 8,26,036 and the Ambassador 1800 MPFI (petrol) Rs 4,08,040. The Indica V2 DLF will now be priced at Rs 3,27,938 (ex-showroom Delhi) and Rs 3,29,071 (ex-showroom Mumbai), while the Indica 2000 MPFI (petrol) will be priced at Rs 3,15,285 and Rs 3,16,182 (ex-showroom Delhi and Mumbai).
