Sasken takes early position on global 3G needs

Kavitha Rajasekhar
Bangalore : With wireless and 3G data access concepts set to take off in 2001, multimedia over mobile platforms is likely to be the next key market. Once new mobile technologies, bandwidth and high capacity/speed data capabilities are in place enabling and providing value-added services to customers is an important part of the industry growth curve. To this end, applications and services like video messaging (multimedia messages-video/voice and image messages), gaming services especially since mobiles are personal use devices, voice mails and Internet browsing are expected to be the big revenue churners. Set to tap this growing market, Bangalore-based Sasken Communication Technologies Ltd has restructured its multimedia business to focus exclusively on the mobile segment.

After having moved out from PC-focused multimedia solutions and Codec (image compression/decompression decoder) solutions for the high-end definition television segment, the company is targeting close to 30 per cent of its total revenues to come from multimedia solutions (protocols stacks and technology) for mobile platforms, according to Sasken vice-president, mobile software, Muralikrishnan G. ``We are targeting Japan, Europe and the US market in that order. Japan is a key market because that is where the 3G system will take off first.

Europe is another market where players are putting in huge funds towards setting up 3G infrastructure. Our focus is on two kinds of customers - handset manufacturers (who will use Sasken software ported onto the chip) and infrastructure manufactureres/equipment vendors,'' Mr Muralikrishnan said. On the offering front Sasken has lined up a number of protocol stacks for four key technologies- GPRS (general packet radio service also known as 2.5G), E-GPRS (enhanced GPRS earlier known as EDGE), W-CDMA (wide-band code division multiple access) and multimode Sasken takes early position on combined protocols which depend on the network of the operator.

A Bluetooth offering mostly bundled with the other GSM/GPRS protocol stacks will also be in place shortly. ``The modules that we have at the moment are suitable for GPRS but are set to become killer applications on 3G. As the 3G networks move from carrying just voice to higher services, our modules are aimed at enabling these high-end multimedia services on the wireless networks,'' he said. Sasken has currently lined up seven customers (three equipment vendors, three chipset vendors and one infrastructure player) including Japan-based Yozan which is a Silicon and 3G test equipment company and Canada-based Sierra Wireless which is a modem manufacturer. The company's 200-people multimedia and mobile software division was targeting a 50:50 revenue mix from products and product related services over the next few years, Mr Muralikrishnan said.
