Mumbai, Feb 19: Following the recent anti-dumping charges levied by the US department of commerce on Indian steel companies, yet another investigation has been launched, this time by the Canadian customs and revenue department (CCRD).The Canadian officials will begin investigation on alleged dumping by Indian steel companies, according to industry sources. These companies include Jindal Vijayanagar Steel (JVSL), Essar Steel, Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and Tata Steel.
CCRD has already asked for details from these companies through an elaborate questionnaire. CCRD is also opposed to import against advance licenses, which is exempted from import duty in India. The investigations have been initiated on export of corrosion resistant steel by these Indian companies.
Ispat has been spared these investigations as it does not export this variety of steel. The investigations by the CCRD were ordered on December 20, last year. Steel companies have been asked to submit information before February 26, 2001, failing which they will be charged with non-cooperation.
The Canadian officials are also expected to arrive in India in the later part of March to counter-check the information provided by the company and also to check the difference in the pricing for domestic trade and international trade.
