TECS to study recast of sick floriculture units

R Ravichandran
Hyderabad, Feb 19: Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has appointed Mumbai-based Tata Economic Consultancy Services (TECS) for conducting a study on developing a financial rehabilitation package for sick floriculture units in the country.

Speaking to The Financial Express, K S Ramakrishna, President, South India Floriculture Association (SIFA), which is holding 60 per cent market share, said TECS was expected to submit its report on the rehabilitation package by the end of the month. Once submitted, APEDA, the main facilitator to the industry, will forward it to the commerce ministry for rehabilitation package. According to Mr Ramakrishna, TECS has structured its presentation involving context/mandate, appreciation of the context, track record of the company, financial performance in the last three years and possible rehabilitation package. TECS was appointed because it perceives floriculture as a venture business. The consultancy group thinks that the industry requires incubation support and deserves venture capital financing mode, Mr Ramakrishna says. TECS will formulate a rehabilitation package based on two modules: The first module is related to process design as the selection of units will be based on analysis of floriculture industry and environment. It will also make a strategic operational review of the proposals submitted by the units including an analysis of financial statements and evaluation of financial needs.

The second is the designing package, which will be based on benchmarking exercise against successful role models and through interactive discussions with the promoters. The ultimate package for rehabilitation will also depend on the technical and management capabilities of the units to benefit from the suggested plan.
