Kolkata: West Bengal's ruling Marxists plan to tap the growing reach of cable television across the state to campaign for the coming state Assembly polls. Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), which heads the state's nine-party ruling coalition, is making programs meant for telecast on cable television across the state. With elections slated for some time in April-May, the party leadership has asked its district units to negotiate with cable operators to allot a channel that would beam party-sponsored campaign programs, CPI-M sources told IANS. The medium was chosen because of its tremendous reach even at the district level. The CPI-M has used cable television to campaign only in state capital Kolkata during the past two general elections. This time, cable-based campaigning will be done in the districts as well. A committee of television experts has been formed to suggest which cable operators should be used.
The programs are expected to highlight achievements of the government during its past 24-year rule. The "unprincipled politics" of the opposition parties would also be in focus.
The CPI-M is also bringing out a book documenting the "lies and falsehoods" being spread by opposition Trinamool Congress. So far, 157 such alleged "lies and half-truths spread by (Trinamool chief) Mamata (Banerjee) for gaining political mileage" have been documented by the CPI-M. Thousands of copies of the book would be printed and sent to CPI-M's district offices to be distributed among the people. The CPI-M feels the people are the best judge of its policies and has decided to embark on a massive door-to-door campaign over the next one month to "warn" voters of the Trinamool's "unprincipled politics of violence."Much of the focus in the election is expected to be on political terrorism.
The Trinamool has turned the issue into its main electoral platform. The Marxists hope to "tell the truth" through an interactive public relations exercise, party sources say. The CPI-M will formally launch its poll campaign with a huge rally here on March 25. Its district units are being mobilized to assess the political climate in their respective areas.
