Shaw Wallace forms strategic planning department

Namrata Singh & Sambit Datta
Mumbai, Feb 18: Manu Chhabria controlled Shaw Wallace & Co Ltd (SWC) has set up a strategic planning department which will play an active role in taking decisions regarding capital expenditure, quality control and setting up new projects.

The new department will also examine the viability of new projects. The company has also set up another wing for the international projects.

SWC executive director Komal Chhabria Wazir told The Financial Express: "To consolidate Shaw Wallace's leadership position, we have conceived the idea of setting up a strategic planning department which would enable us to take internal decisions in a hassle free manner. For the international projects we have opened another wing."

She added further: "The company has recently hired investment advisor McKinsey & Company, which would assist the company with the requisite approvals for listing on the US bourse. We are afoot to introduce Royal Challenge whiskey globally. We are also working out the possibility of acquiring a distillery in Scotland. This will help to intensify our business in India once the ban on import of bottled scotch whiskey is removed."

"The company is also planning a major expansion of its wines business. To increase its wine products, it is also planning to buy land in Karnataka for setting up a vineyard, where the best variety of grapes can be grown. At present, the company is in talks with the Karnataka state government for buying the lands," she said.

The company is on the verge of disposing off its subsidiary, Shaw Wallace Gelatine Ltd. The company has appointed Rabo Bank India Ltd as the advisor for a buyer for the agrochem and gelatine businesses. The company is also going to set up four new breweries in India at a cost of around Rs 100 crore. The foremost among the new breweries will come up in Kerala, while the other three will be located in Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. Work in Kerala will commence immediately and the brewery is expected to come up at the end of 12 months.
