CNBC open to DTH foray

Krishna Gopalan
Mumbai : CNBC India is not ruling out the possibility of entering the DTH market, according to Mr Peter Juno, vice president and director of operations and strategic development, CNBC (Asia Pacific), in an interview with eFE.

According to him, this is likely to happen when CNBC ceases to be a free-to-air channel. "There are too many government restrictions which control the market today", says Mr Juno. He adds that channels the world over are switching to a pay system and India will eventually follow suit."The key to succeeding in any market is to create a niche for your product" says Mr Juno. People, he explains, must be given a choice to view what they want to. "We will enter the DTH market once we believe we are completely equipped" he says. Mr Juno was unable to put a definite timeframe on CNBC's entry into this market.

CNBC India, at this stage, is working towards improving the quality of uplink. "We are making an investment of half a million dollars for the direct uplink from New Delhi to Singapore" said Mr Juno. This is expected to improve the quality of telecast for the channel.

The poor quality of infrastructure in India has been an area of concern to CNBC. According to Mr Juno, the real problem is the lack of authentic figures from the cable operators. "In three years, there will be a consolidation in the market resulting in ten large cable operators", he predicts.
