Mumbai, Feb 13: Mumbai-based power utilities and competitors, Tata Power Company (TPC) and BSES Ltd are to invest Rs 500 crore each in setting up baggase-based power generation plants in the sugarcane rich region of Western Maharashtra."TPC and BSES have signed Memoranda of Understanding with 10 co-operative sugar factories to boost baggase-based cogen in the state," state Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation Ltd (MITCON) managing director Dr Pradeep Bavadekar said in a release here on Tuesday.
The plants would be raised on "Build-Own-Operate" basis and would generate about 15 mw of power each, of which 8-10 mw would be "exportable surplus" to be sold to state electricity board (MSEB) or private parties at Rs three per unit, he said.
"With this, the sugar factories with modern cogen plants will be able to earn an additional revenue of Rs 100 per tonne of the cane crushed in the factory," Mr Bavadekar said. Mitcon has already identified 60 sugar factories in the state which would collectively generate 1,100 mw of power.
