Mumbai: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has computerised its Mumbai refinery at a cost of Rs 1 crore. HPCL director (refineries) Mr D S Mathur said that the computerisation was carried out following recommendation by management consultants, Andersen Consulting. He added that the new Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) by Maximo, would improve planning and routine maintenance activities, leading to reduced time in execution.
Mr Mathur said that computerisation would lead to improved focus on preventive maintenance which should lead to less breakdown of equipment, online availibility of maintenance records, equipment details and equipment history for analysis. He added that online vendor rating and monitoring will assist in selection of quality vendors.
About 430 users in the refinery from relevant functions were trained hands-on to use the software spanning over a period of two and a half months.
HPCL plans to computerise Vishakhapatnam refinery in the next couple of months, said Mr Mathur. With the computerisation, HPCL's Mumbai refinery is the first public sector refinery in India to install such an integrated software package.
