New Delhi, Feb 11 : The UB Group is planning to set up McDowell Terminus Shops - a chain of retail liquor outlets across the country. However, UB's has decided to skip Delhi from its plans as the state government has refused to grant permission for company-owned outlets. He confirmed that the Delhi government has refused to grant permission to the company to set up outlets in the State. Speaking to The Financial Express, McDowell International Brands Ltd's chief executive officer (CEO) BK Pardal confirmed that the Delhi government has declined permission for retail outlets owned by the company. He said the company will have to miss out on Delhi if the state government sticks to its stand. In Delhi, the state government exclusively owns the retail outlets through various organisations such as Delhi Tourism Corporation and Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation. Private players are not allowed to set up retail outlets.
This refusal by the Delhi government would also translate to some changes in the company's other project - McDowell chain of high end lifestyle outlets which it proposes to set up across the country. The outlets in Delhi will not be able to sell wine and spirits. The very concept of the outlets was to sell everything that is related to lifestyle drinking.
Mr Pardal said: "We have decided to set up UB Terminus Shops because we feel there is not a single liquor outlet in the country where everyone including woman can go and pick up their choice of wine, spirits or brands.""We propose to set up outlets which will be like a superstore where you can pick just walk in and pick up the drink of your choice without standing in a que," he added.
According to him, the company will set up the liquor retail outlets across the country. The first outlet will come up in Mumbai, followed by other major cities. UB Terminus Shops will be set up in the next four to six months.
