Patni Computer Systems shifts to SBU model

Kavita Nair
Mumbai : The Mumbai-based PCS Limited (Patni Computer Systems Limited) has shifted to the Strategic Business Unit (SBU) model from the traditional marketing and delivery organisation and has decided to focus on particular expertise and emerging technology to create end-to-end responsibility. PCS is also increasing its focus outside of the US by opening offices in Stuttgard (Germany), Tokyo (Japan) and will be opening an office in Melbourne (Australia) shortly. The company has nine SBUs which fall under Japan (which looks clients from that country), GE (which caters exclusively to GE), insurance, KAGC, e-business, embedded technology solutions, EAI (Enterprise Application Integration), NSM (Network Solution Management) and ESD (Engineering Services Division). Mr Kiran Patwardhan, Vice-President Asia Pacific, PCS, said that the strategy was to create profit centers and a focus for directing future growth. The SBU structure led to a change in the marketing organisation. "This brings a lot of accountability intothe organisation.

The advantage of this is that you can set focused targets. Now with SBUs responsible for growth in their area it is now more marketing driven than sales driven," he added.

The focus of the SBU in Japan is on language, its double byte character and cultural differences which come into play while handling customers. PCS has a strategic business unit for GE which had taken a 10 per cent stake in the company. Under KAGC which is its key account and general customer PCS offers those requirements of customers, which do not fall into a particular SBU. The focus in the KAGC unti is on legacy systems and mainframe systems which either have to be manufactured, Web-enabled or even perhaps migrate from older mainframes to open systems.
