Four-day agri expo in Lucknow
As part of measures to attract investment in agro-based industries in Uttar Pradesh and enhance its export potential in fruits and vegetables, an `agri expo' is being organised in Lucknow from February 17. "Our idea is to present Uttar Pradesh to industrialists for attracting investment mainly in the food processing sector besides showcasing latest technologies before farmers of the state," state's agriculture and agro export minister Diwakar Vikram Singh said. Billed as one of the largest events of its kind in the country, the four-day exhibition would be of immense help to farmers of the state, which is a leading producer of rice, fruits, vegetables, sugar, dairy products and meat, besides having made strides in fisheries and bio-technology, he said. "Uttar Pradesh will soon emerge as an exporter of vegetables, flowers, fruits and a host of other products to the middle east and other parts of the world," he said referring to international cargo flights operating from Lucknow. Agri Expo-2001 is beingorganised by the Centre for Agriculture and Rural Development, in collaboration with Ficci and Uttar Pradesh government.

Global oilseeds output to go up
World output of the seven major oilseeds is seen up 2 million tonne to 296.79 million in 2000-01, independent industry newsletter Oil World said.

Despite a record outturn of 167.75 million tonne of soybeans, the shortfall in sunflower seed and rapeseed crops would leave output growth well behind the annual average of eight million tonnes in the last five years.

Relief package for quake victims
Textiles minister Kashiram Rana has announced a relief and rehabilitation package for about 1 lakh quake victims in Gujarat. The package comprises support from various segments of the textile sector and organisations under the textiles ministry. Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has contributed Rs 21 lakh and despatched 8,500 blankets for Ahmedabad and 10,500 blankets for Rajkot. The ready-made garment industry's support is Rs 5 crore either in cash or kind, while TEXPROCIL's contribution is Rs 2.11 crore. Silk and Rayon Textile Export Promotion Council will provide Rs 2 crore. National Textile Corporation has already sent dhotis and sheets to Ahmedabad and 1,800 blankets are further being sent. It has also volunteered a support of Rs 50 lakh.

50,000 tn onion export approved
Commerce and industry minister Murasoli Maran has approved a quantity of 50,000 tonnes of onions for export with immediate effect. The quantity will have to be exported by March 31 next by seven canalising agencies either directly or through their registered exporters, says an official release. The canalising agencies and the quantity allocated against each are National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (25,000 tonne), Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (10,000 tonne), Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Ltd (5,000 tonne) and The Spices Trading Corporation Ltd, AP State Trading Corporation Ltd, the Karnataka State Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd (2500 tonnes each).
