Digital revolution -- Broadcast Engineering Society meet today

Our eFE Bureau
New Delhi : The digitalisation of Doordarshan is being effected in phases and it's still a long way before it becomes completely digitalised. In spite of that, the Broadcast Engineering Society (India) will focus on the digital revolution in the Indian broadcasting sector during the three-day conference and exhibition being held here from February 1. It will be the seventh expo being organised by the BES since its inception in 1987. Addressing the press conference announcing the BES expo, Mr RK Gupta, president BES and chief engineer, Doordarshan, said that the theme of the event would be `Digital Broadcasting - Towards a Convergent World'. "The expo will deal not only with digital broadcasting for radio and television, but also DTH and Internet," he said. A tutorial session on digital compression for its members and delegates will be a special feature of the expo. Explaining the logic behind holding such a conference, Mr Gupta said: "The digital revolution sweeping the broadcasting scene has made a massiveimpact on the current free-to-air market all over the world and India is no exception."

Also, the fact that Direct-to-Home (DTH) TV service and Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) were likely to be a reality by the end of this year, made the BES conference timely, he added. The expo will attract 61 companies all over the world including from the US, the UK, Canada, Belgium, France, Hong Kong, China and Israel. Out of the 61 companies, there will be 25 foreign companies and another 26 will be represented by dealers and distributors of foreign companies. Among the major companies participating in the three-day meet are Barco, Canon, JVC, Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Thomcast. Said Mr Gupta: "The BES expo is expected to be a major attraction for the professionals as it will display the latest state of the art broadcast equipment manufactured by the leading Indian and foreign companies." Approved by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and supported by All India Radio, Doordarshan and the Society of Broadcast Engineers (US), the BES Expo 2001 has been rated as India's top exhibition in thefield of broadcasting.
