Cabinet meet to decide on divestment of key PSUs

New Delhi, Jan 17: The Cabinet Committee on Disinvestment (CCD) will meet on January 30 next to decided about the divestment of key public sector undertakings like Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).

This was decided at a meeting of key ministers convened by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in New Delhi on Wednesday. The CCD, it might be mentioned, was getting postponed because of differences among the ministers.

Briefing newspersons, finance minister Yashwant Sinha said that the meeting, which was a continuance of the earlier meeting, discussed various proposals relating to the general budget. As the discussion remained inconclusive, the ministers would meet again on January 28 next. The meeting, Mr Sinha said, also discussed, "the economic reforms agenda of the government" and steps needed to be taken to accelerate the reforms programme. He added, "We would like to take the reforms to the people and make it as people-friendly as possible." The meeting, among others, was attended by Home Minister LK Advani, Power Minister Suresh Prabhu, Defence Minister George Fernandes, Industries Minister Murasoli Maran and Disinvestment Minister Arun Shourie.

External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh could not attend the meeting as he was abroad.
