Escada goes ethnic

UPASANA PANDE
Winning the beauty crowns at world parades over the last few years, Indian beauty queens have brought home international fashion garments manufacturers as well. The last one of them is Escada, an international women's fashion garment manufacturer. Escada has recently opened up its retail outlet in South Delhi in association with BIVA Trading Pvt Ltd.

The outlet showcases an extensive array of fashion garments for women-ranging from casuals to formals, which include evening dresses, suits, shirts, blouses, tops, trousers, jeans and sportswear. Matching accessories like handbags, perfumes, shoes and sandals are also on offer.

Escada's winter collection, currently on display, endorses the typical colourful ethnic Jaipur theme. Says Mr Varun Verma, director of BIVA Pvt Ltd: "For every season, we have different themes and for this season Jaipur is the theme for this winter." He adds, "Only the embroidery work would be done in Pune and the rest of the work on the outfit would be carried out in Germany. Also, our new summer 2001 collection would be ready soon, probably by the end of February or March."

Escada collections are broadly divided into three categories. Escada Couture, Escada ML and Escada Sports. The company is confident of the success for Escada ML and Escada Sports collections. The company is not introducing its couture range in India as the market is not ready for it yet. "Escada Couture are highly priced garments and are not much in demand here. Whereas, the casuals, formals and informal wears comprising the Escada ML and the windcheaters, swimwears and golf stuff under the sports category will do well," Mr Verma adds.

The outlet also exhibits embroidered skirts and pants, body-clinging jumpsuits, cuddly overcoats, fur-trimmed sweaters, printed and wool stitch denims and suits for the working ladies. Then there are dresses with jewels embellished, pantsuits with wrap jackets and the list is endless.

But hold on! These are all targeted at elite customer class. "Being designer and fashion garments, our products are priced at a premium over other products available in the market," clarifies Mr Verma.

The prices for Escada garments and accessories available at the retail outlet range from Rs 1,000 onwards to Rs 50,000. But, according to Mr Verma, the outlet has already received an overwhelming response based on which the company intends to open its outlets in Mumbai, Calcutta and Banglore.

"The material for the outfits is procured from Germany. The garments are even designed and made there," says Mr Verma. However, some of the beadwork on them is carried out in Indonesia.
