BSNL floats zone-wise tenders for Rs 1,800-cr GSM project

New Delhi: The tenders for the Rs 1,800 crore-GSM project have been announced by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The project, which entails installing 39 lakh GSM lines will be divided into four zones: North, South, East, and West Zones. Separate tenders have been invited for all these zones. The tender documents for all the four zones will be available from January 19, 2001 at different cities located in these zones. The last date of submission of tenders is April 2, 2001, according to BSNL sources. The tender for the West zone is for 10 lakh lines and its tenders will be issued from Mumbai. The tender for the North zone is also for 10 lakh lines and will be issued from Ambala. The tender for South zone is for 14 lakh lines and will be issued from Thiruvananthapuram. The tender for the East zone is for 4 lakh lines and will be issued from Patna, added sources. The BSNL had earlier decided to combine its current requirement of 15 lakh GSM lines, with its requirement of 25 lakh additional GSM lines in the next year, and has come out with a consolidated massive project, which will cost around Rs 1,800 crore. BSNL plans to go about implementation of the ambitious GSM project in a phased manner. According to Dr DPS Seth, chairman and managing director, BSNL," 15 lakh lines will be installed in Phase I, to be executed by October 2001 and 25 lakh lines to be installed as part of the second phase." The tender for GSM lines is for providing cellular telephony to cities and villages adjoining those cities, acrossIndia. All international equipment majors, including Motorola, Ericsson, Lucent Technologies, Nokia, Alcatel, and Nortel, etc. are expected to participate in this tender.
