Pune, Jan 14 : Steyr India (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of the Magna Steyr Engineering of Austria, has conceived an entirely new vehicle specifically designed for the Indian and South East Asian markets. It is neither a two-wheeler nor a four-wheeler and no, it will not remotely resemble a rickshaw. But Steyr is not willing to disclose much."Some prototypes are ready and we will unveil it and present to leading manufacturers in India," said Steyr India general manager (marketing) Rajeev Ranadive. "It is like nothing you have seen before," he added. An entirely new concept from ground up.
But Mr Ranadive drops hints. The layout of the wheel is completely unconventional and not placed where you are used to seeing it. The seat frame and chassis is integrated to keep the entire vehicle's weight down to less than 350 kg. The seating is not front and rear, it is side-by-side with space for luggage/children. And the price tag for this unicorn? Will be below Rs 1 lakh, he said.
The company is upbeat about this creation of theirs as they see no competition on the horizon. "There is a limit to which the two-wheeler can be stretched or a small car can be squeezed," he says. The vehicles designed so far are not totally safe and are unlikely to meet the price target. Our vehicle has all the attributes a two-wheeler owner aspires for - stability, safety and fuel economy, said Mr Ranadive.
"We are looking at only some large manufacturers as partners in this project," he said. The vehicle will be unveiled after the local partner is finalised.
