Chennai : Yet another good year for the Indian apparel industry. The overall exports of readymade garments during January-December 2000 have grown both in terms of quantity and value. It has increased to 1,504.7 million pieces from 1,404.4 million pieces in January-December 1999, registering a growth of about 7.14 per cent. And in value terms exports have increased to US $5,765.2 million about 8.3 per cent over the previous year performance of US $5,323.5 million.However in rupee terms, exports during the period has grown by about 12.8 per cent to Rs 25,852.24 crore from Rs 22,915.14 crore in the previous year.According to the figures released by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), readymade garments export to USA during the period have grown to 312.6 million pieces from 272.8 million pieces in the previous year. In value terms also, there has been a significant growth in the exports to the US. It has increased to US $2,063.9 million, about 31.22 per cent over the previous year performance of US $1,572.8 million.
Exports to European Union (EU) have started showing positive growth after nearly four years. During the period under review, exports to EU have increased to 695.4 million pieces, amounting to US $1,908.6 million as against 631.3 million pieces, valuing US $1,792.5 million in the previous year.
Similarly, exports to Canada have also improved to 80.7 million pieces valued at US $259.1 million. This is about 15.45 per cent more in terms of quantity and 13.49 per cent more in terms of value, compared to the previous year performance of 69.9 million pieces and US $228.3 million respectively.
