Derek O' Brien's firm conceptualises `Knowledge Quotient'

Krishna Gopalan
Mumbai, Jan 4: Global Knowledge Portals, a company promoted by renowned quiz master Derek O'Brien, has conceptualised a new measure called Knowledge Quotient (KQ). This was confirmed by Mr O'Brien. "KQ is a universal measure of knowledge" said Mr O'Brien. He explained that existing methods are limited to being a test of memory rather than a test of knowledge. According to Mr O'Brien, KQ will be initially targeting Indians and Indians living abroad. A person can log onto www.kqscore.com and register for the KQ test.

KQ is categorised under four areas - school KQ, career KQ, leisure KQ and self KQ. "The questions under each subject area will be changed three to four times a day" said Mr O'Brien. He added that in the event of a subject that does not exist and is requested, it will made available in forty-eight hours.

On his company's plans for KQ, Mr O'Brien said the next one year would be spent in establishing the credibility of KQ. "We need to build a KQ brand, which will have to evolve eventually" he explained. Global Knowledge Portals has invested Rs 3 crore for the KQ project. According to Mr O'Brien, his company's revenues comprise knowledge content that are on television, CD-ROMs besides publications. He explained that the offline business is well established to take care of initial revenues for KQ. At this stage, KQ covers more than 250 subjects. Ten questions are given to the individual when he decides to measure his KQ. After the person takes the KQ-Check, his score is mapped on a percentile curve with the scores of others who have taken it. The person's ranking at that stage will determine his percentile.

In time, said Mr O'Brien, KQ will extend this service to corporates who can use it for their employees. Mr O'Brien added that KQ was not a website and its USP was its content. Global Knowledge Portals, formerly Big Ideas, was established a decade ago. The company provides knowledge-based content for a variety of mediums. The television projects include "Bournvita Quiz Contest" on Zee TV, "Koteeswaran" on Sun TV and "Jeeto Chappar Phad Ke" to be launched on Sony Entertainment Television.

Global Knowledge hosts stage shows across the world for students, corporates and professionals besides having books on quizzing.
