ISMA urges Centre to stock 20 lakh tonne with Rs 1,500 cr cess

New Delhi, Dec 24 : The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has urged the government to create 20 lakh tonne buffer stock with the help of Rs 1,500 crore Sugar Development Fund (SDF) collected from cess imposed on sugar.Mr Tilak Dhar, ISMA president alleged that the government never created buffer stocks since 1996-97. The buffer stocks created on four occasions since October 1, 1982 was to the extent of five lakh tonne per year and was usually released in the same year. Alongwith export promotional efforts, the government should consider it equally important to create a buffer stock of sugar, he said.First buffer stock of five lakh tonne was created in October 1, 1982 and then an additional buffer stock of five lakh tonne was created in October 1, 1983 and all these stocks were released by November 1, 1984. Thereafter a buffer stock of five lakh tonne was created in April 1, 1993 and was released in September 30, 1993. Thereafter a buffer stock of five lakh tonne was created in January 10, 1996 and released on July 9, 1998 and another buffer stock of five lakh tonne was created on December 1996 and released on Nov 11, 1997.
