Is Deepak Shourie finally quitting Zee?

Nivedita Mookerji
New Delhi : The mystery surrounding the role of Mr Deepak Shourie, who was earlier heading Zee's print publications, radio and Zee News channel, is getting deeper. Significantly, Mr Shourie has now proceeded on a long leave till December 31, according to his New Delhi office.

Even as the A T Kearney restructuring report, the results of which were made public last week, made no mention of Mr Shourie and his role in the organisation, there's no official announcement from Zee as to whether Mr Shourie would continue in the company or not.

Only last month, Mr Shourie was said to have put in his papers over his company sidelining him in the restructuring process. But, at that point Zee had confirmed that Mr Shourie was staying on with the company.

Now that Mr Shourie has gone on long leave amidst the restructuring controversy, many in the industry feel that Mr Shourie is planning to leave. On whether Mr Shourie is quitting, Mr R K Singh, Head of Corporate Services, Zee Network, told The Financial Express: ``Maybe, but I'm not aware of it.''Replying to a query on how Mr Shourie is placed in the organisation after the restructuring exercise, Mr Singh said: ``He's looking after publishing, which is a hived off unit and therefore not a part of Zee Telefilms Ltd.'' Publishing is a unit, jointly owned by Mr Shourie and the chairman, Mr Subhash Chandra, according to Mr Singh. Mr Shourie could not be contacted for his comments.

After the restructuring of the Zee Network, Mr Alok Dutta, who was earlier heading the Zee Organic channel, will now be in a much more powerful position. Mr Dutta has been appointed the Chief Operating Officer for the `Content' businesses and will work under the strategic directions of the chairman.

On the other hand, Mr Dev Naganand, who was heading the convergence and distribution business, will now head the `Access' division of Zee, which covers cable networking, Direct to Operators (DTO), Direct to Home (DTH) and Internet business.

Mr R K Singh, who was till now the group head of corporate services, will assume an even more powerful role. Mr Singh will head the corporate services in both `Content' and `Access'-the two major sections in the Zee Network after the restructuring effort. Mr Singh will also look after the international business in Europe, Africa, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Mauritius.

Going by the A T Kearney recommendations, Zee has divided its operations into four parts: Content, Access, Corporate and Education. While Content, Access and Corporate will be headed by Mr Alok Dutta, Mr Dev Naganand and Mr R K Singh, respectively, Ms Uma Ganesh will head the `Education' section.According to Mr R K Singh, the restructuring process is not just a cosmetic process. ``It has major implications,'' Mr Singh said. He added that restructuring will bring about a synergy in the organisation, along with cost-effectiveness, focus, new opportunities and of course higher revenues. Although A T Kearney is expected to complete the restructuring process of Zee in another three to four months, the channel will immediately implement the recommendations which are already out.
