Original pieces from furncraft

ANANYA MUKHERJEE
Furniture is no longer about chairs and tables that satisfy a given utility need, it is increasingly becoming a statement of fashion and luxury. FURNcraft, in Delhi's Gulmohar Park, is the dream factory of Seetu and Nitin Kohli, a unique showroom, which not only caters to residential furniture, but a wide range of designer home accessories as well.

Inspired from the various styles prevalent in furniture history, you can find a touch of Victorian art here, a dash of Art Deco, some contemporary themes and some very abstract ones too. FURNcraft is among the first ones to bring to India the `Love Seat', say the Kohlis. A very popular concept abroad, the young entrepreneurs decided it was time to launch it in the Indian market as well.

Mr Nitin Kohli says, "I actually sat with my wife and got measured the dimensions that would make two people sit very comfortably together in one chair. It was with those measurements that we made the love seats." The love seat, which, according to the Kohlis, is becoming quite a fad in India, costs Rs 14,000, plus extra for the fabric. Mr Kohli's love seat is a huge cream coloured chair for two, with a soft padded foot-rest in the front.

FURNcraft offers other attractions, too, and not all of these require a bulging purse. A chair that looks like it is made from the finest marble is actually a polished teakwood chair in the price range of Rs 14,000. There is an entire range of aromatherapy candles. However, the most sought after items at FURNcraft are its embroidered cushion covers. The exquisitely designed covers are available in gold embroidery and cut glass, and cater to a large segment of people as they are priced between Rs 500 and Rs 1,300 per piece.

FURNcraft is a specialised furniture shop and its product range includes residential furniture, interior accessories, office interiors and stained glass accessories. The media used range from wood, wrought iron and glass to wax and fabric. The Kohlis believe firmly that people want customised furniture and are willing to pay for the privilege. So they spend considerable time and effort on research and development, keeping on a young team of professional interior designers and architects for the purpose.
