Globalwonders.com to expand network

Mumbai : Globalwonders.com, which has executed sales of 480 consumer electronics and appliances since May this year, is operating on a margin of 1-2 per cent, which is at a huge discount to margins of 10-12 per cent in the consumer electronics industry.

Says Sundarsons Electronics Ltd (SEL) managing director KS Raman: "The total volume of e-commerce transactions in India was Rs 450 crore in the year 1999-2000. Of this, Rs 50 crore came from business-to-consumer and Rs 400 crore from business-to-business transactions."

According to Mr Raman: "E-business transactions in India are expected to touch Rs 3,500 crore during 2000-01. Of this, Rs 300 crore could comprise retail transaction and Rs 3,200 crore of business-to-business transaction."Adds Mr Raman: "But with regulatory framework firmly in place, improvement in telecom infrastructure, increase in PC penetration could lead to Rs 15,000 crore of e-commerce transaction in India. "

The Rs 5 crore Sundarsons Electronics Ltd (SEL) has launched globalwonders.com, the first e-commerce portal for online trading activities for industry partners and direct consumers across major cities. SEL has tied up with HDFC Bank for its B2B and B2C activities.

"SEL's authorised capital stands at Rs 10 crore and Rs 4.6 crore as the paid-up capital. Salora International Ltd and Mirc Electronics Ltd has invested a total of Rs 7.6 crore in SEL. The portal has tied up with 400 dealers across major cities. Adds Mr Raman: "We are planning to expand the number of dealers by an additional 600 next year." The site has also tied up with eindia.com, ibaya.com.com in US, chaitime.com in US and UK, among others, for orders booked by NRIs and delivered anywhere in India. Adds Mr Raman: "The talks are currently on with cafemumbai of ICICI, Asian Sky Shop and Yellam.com of chennai (an auction site)."

As part of the expansion strategy, SEL is appointing nine franchisee agents in UAE, US, Thailand, Philippines, Italy, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arbia, Bahrain and Oman. Adds Mr Raman: "So far, the company has received concrete proposals for a franchisee from Saudi Arabia, UAE and Thailand." Globalwonders.com is negotiating for implementing the payment gateway of Citibank.
