Employees protest privatisation ofinsurance sector
Gulbarga, Nov 19 : After a great deal of exhaustive and unsuccessful attempts to desist the Union government from throwing the insurance sector open to private players, the insurance employees' union has decided to take the issue to the general public and mobilise their support for the cause. The AIEA joint secretary, K Venugopal, told newsmen here on Sunday, that the employees would launch a nation-wide campaign against the government's decision to allow private and foreign companies to enter the insurance sector. He said, in 1956, the Nehru regime had nationalised about 243 private insurance companies, including those run by the Tata's, following large scale complaints of cheating the policy holders. But the present government had thrown open the insurance sector to the private players without providing any kind of security to the policy holders. Mr Venugopal claimed that the claim settlement ratio of LIC and GIC was around 97 per cent, whereas the average of those foreign companies that evinced interest to enter India for insurance business wore a dismal figure of average, in terms of settlements.
