New Delhi : Losing sleep over the privacy of your e-mail or having nightmares about your PC getting hacked? Relax, you can lock your messages and keep the secret in a physical key in your pocket. Delhi based-Wonder Software Technologies, in association with the US-based Rainbow Technologies, has developed a software solution for encrypting files using a digital code residing on a physical key. The software named `WonderCrypt' is developed by Wonder Software and the physical key, which is called `iKey', has been manufactured by Rainbow Technologies. The software helps in creating digital signature, encryption and decryption of files. It also allows storage and retrieval of information from the physical key. According to the director of Wonder Software, Mr R Saran, the software, once installed on a PC, generates a set of a public key and a private key for a specified user. The public key is the secret key, which is used to add digital signatures to documents and to decrypt the encrypted files. However, the public key can be known to others as it is used to verify digital signatures and encrypting files.
The private key, being a secret code, is saved on ikey once and retrieved whenever required, he added. The ikey can be kept on a key chain and can be connected to a computer through USB (Universal Serial Bus) port. The key can store upto 8 KB of data and works with a PIN code to make it secure from misuse. Mr Saran said, "The software creates digital signatures using MD5 standard of RSA algorithms. The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is used for encrypting and decrypting of files." The software can encrypt text, images, audio, and videos files, he claimed adding that it can also encrypt selected parts of the text within a document.
The software has been developed using the Java language and can be installed on all Microsoft platforms. The software is priced at Rs 4,000 per user license, including physical key and a cord to connect the key with the computer.
