New Delhi, Nov 13: Ranbaxy Science Foundation has announced its annual awards for the year 1999 in recognition of outstanding original research contributions by the Indian scientists in the field of medical and pharmaceutical sciences.Each award carries a citation, a trophy and a cash award of Rs 1 lakh. A panel of judges, comprising of eminent scientists, have selected Prof John Kuriyan from Rackefeller University, Dr Anil Tyagi, Prof SS Agarwal, Dr IC Verma and Dr Mansukh C Wani for the 1999 awards in various categories.
The winners would be honoured at the seventh annual symposium of Ranbaxy Science Foundation on December 23, 2000 in New Delhi. The awards would be conferred by the chief guest and key note speaker of the symposium, Prof Steven M Haffner, professor of medicine, University of Texas Health Science Centre, USA.
Prof Kuriyan is the winner of the award in the field of medical sciences- basic research for his outstanding contributions in the areas of DNA replication and cellular signalling in eukaryotes.
Dr Tyagi, professor of Biochemistry, South Campus, University of Delhi has been selected for the excellence in the area of medical sciences-applied research and for his contributions leading to a greater understanding of molecular genetics and gene expression in mycobacteris.
Prof Agarwal is a professor of eminence at Sanjay Gandhi Post-graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow. Dr Verma is a senior consultant and head department of genetic medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. Both of them have been selected to share the award in the field of medical sciences-clinical research.
Ranbaxy Science Foundation is a non-profit organisation and was set up as an independent society in 1985 with the mission of providing impetus to the scientific endeavour in the country by encouraging and rewarding excellence in medical and pharma research.
