He is the heart-throb of many a young Indian. He has the looks to make most women swoon. So it came as no surprise that Mr Aryan Vaid was crowned Grasim Mr International earlier this month. Amidst 25 contestants from all over the world, Mr Vaid took away the prestigious title of Grasim Mr International 2000, which carries a cash prize of US$ 6,000. He talks to Ananya Mukherjee in a free wheeling interview:How does it feel now that your life has changed so dramatically?
Well, my life hasn't really changed, only I travel a lot now, the sad part being that I can't be with my family for more than two days.
How do you think your family background and grooming helped you succeed?
I come from a family of gypsies and my mother sold me for Rs 500 (chuckles). Yes, definitely my background helped me succeed, I firmly believed in what I wanted to do and my family always supported me in that. They had faith in my abilities and so today I stand where I am.
Where do you go from here-acting and some social work or do you move on to another international title?
No more titles for me. I have been very fortunate both times-during Mr India and Mr International. I am not moving on to any more international titles. There is too much of pressure, so I am breezing out of it. About what is next in my life, I don't think it is a question of acting or social work, I will now be out, doing some good work for my country and myself. I was already associated with the National Association for the Blind, I will carry that a step further. And I shall be working on a No Smoking campaign. Besides that, films, yes, I am working in a couple of them.
What sort of films-run of the mill commercial movies or the proverbial "something different"?
I don't think movies can be classified as commercial and non-commercial, in fact they can be classified as good and not-good. I will try to do good movies, the rest is upto the people who may or may not like it. My first film is called Heartbeat and Pooja Batra is my co-star in the film. This film is directed by Mr Nitish Roy and is slated for a January release. By that time, I am supposed to start shooting for another film.
Has winning the title helped you in any way, given the fact that you already had an established business?
Definitely, the title has improved my talent per se. It has further provided me a platform from where I can do something for my country. And this is apart from the fact that whenever people meet me now-at the airport or in a car park-they say, "You have made us proud". Thus a lot of expectations that people had from me have been fulfilled. This is a personal landmark for me.
Any regrets, or are you satisfied doing what you are doing at present?
No regrets as such, but I would have loved to continue in my business. See, I have been doing quite a number of things in my life. I did my graduation from the Dadar Catering College, Mumbai. Then I joined the Leela Hotel as a chef. I have flown with the Sahara Airlines as a flight purser. Also, I have been actively involved in theatre and have done street plays. Then I started my own catering business, which supplied food to The Indian Medical Association, Mumbai, and the Rotary Club. I would have loved to continue with that, but at present, I have constraints.
And what does Aryan like to do in his free time?
I am passionate about music and I love to read. Besides that, I like adventure sports, so I might learn sky diving. I am planning to learn self-hypnosis also, since I have always been fascinated with the working of the human mind.
What about the controversy around your winning the title? Many people said that the judging was not fair?
I have already said this in the press conference and I am saying it again. We Indians have a habit of finding flaws in Indian victories. Though I have been asked not to talk about it, yet I have started taking this as a personal issue. Some reports said the judging was unfair, that there was favouritism shown toward the Indian contestant-I think this is totally wrong. I have been working for months for this contest and I gave my best shot to it, I did not let down the expectations that so many people had of me. I think such an attitude among some sections in society is really disturbing.
