Cabinet to discuss proposal to set up Rs 1,000cr Medicinal Plants Board

Our Economic Bureau
New Delhi, Oct 30: The Union Cabinet will take up for discussion the proposal to set up Rs 1,000 crore Medicinal Plants Board on November 2, said the health and family welfare minister, CP Thakur. Mr Thakur, who was addressing a press conference in Capital on Monday, said that several Union ministries like agriculture, rural development, environment and forests, small scale industries and agro-rural industries, aricultural universities, scientific institutions and NGOs will be represented in the board. The state governments should also think of setting up state medicinal plants boards at their levels under the chairmanship of the state minister of Indian systems of medicines and homeopathy.

All states will endeavour to identify an area of 3,000 to 5,000 hectare of denuded or degraded forest land for growing medicinal plants under the scheme for setting up of vanaspati vans being implemented by the department of family welfare. The state governments will take steps to assess annual consumption of plant based raw drugs in the state to plan developmental programme for medicinal plants. The state drug licensing authorities should provide information on required consumption of raw material by the manufacturing units. The state departments of Indian systems of medicines and homeopathy will coordinate with the agricultural universities and other research organisations to draw collaborative programmes to encourage cultivation of medicinal plants particularly those which are in short supply and needs to be conserved and cultivated.

The state governments will encourage and assist in establishment of demonstration gardens for medicinal plants in research institutes and pharmacies and also organise training programmes for farmers, cooperatives and tribal population on agro-techniques, collection, harvesting and storage of medicinal plants. States should set up medicinal plants conservation areas covering all eco-systems, forest types and sub-types. They should encourage cultivation of 25 medicinal plants identified by the task force of the Planning Commission. Gram panchayats should be encouraged to set up herbal gardens in each block under rural development schemes.
