Alembic launches anti-inflammatory, analgesic molecules

Sanjay Sardana
New Delhi, Oct 30: The Rs 400-crore Alembic Ltd has expanded its reach in the fastest growing analgesics and anti-inflammatory segment with the launch of new molecules Rofecoxib and Celecoxib.

The company recently received the permission from the Drugs Controller General of India to manufacture and market the molecule in the domestic market. Alembic is marketing Rofecoxib and Celecoxib molecules under the brand names, Rofegesic and Sionara.

The company has also launched three more products Roxid M, Nimegesic drops and Lormeg D in the domestic formulation segment, thus taking the total launch of new products to 17 in the current year. These launches together will contribute around Rs 40-45 crore, which will constitute around 10-12 per cent to the company's turnover of domestic formulation business.

"Ninegesic drops is indicated for fever in children and will further strengthen our Nimegesic brand and our position at the level of pediatricians where we are currently third most-prescribed company," Alembic Ltd wholetime director Malika C Amin told The Financial Express.

The world over, Celecoxib and Rofecoxib are top-most prescribed NSAID and were introduced in the international market only at the end of the last year. These two drugs are expected to yield an annual revenue of around over 20 crore for Alembic, she said.

While Sionara is positioned for arthritis, Rofegesic has a much broader spectrum and has been positioned as powerful, yet peaceful analgesic. It is indicated to both acute as well as chronic pain like dysmenorhoea, post surgical and arthritic pains.

Because of its high safety, it offers freedom to doctors for its prescription without any restriction on side effects like gastric bleeding which is closely associated with all conventional NSAIDs.

"The company was recently awarded ISO 14001 certification, the international accreditation for environment management system by KPMG and has become the fifth pharma company in India to achieve this certification, which will help us improve our international market", Mrs Amin said.

Alembic, apart from Ranbaxy is one of the few companies to have introduced the molecule Rofecoxib in the domestic market. Rofecoxib along with Celecoxib has a a total market size of over Rs 100 crore in India.

The company is also planning many unique promotional activities for these brands, Mrs Amin added.

Alembic, better known for its popular cough syrup Glycodin, recently launched Nimegesic IR, a patented technology for Nimesulide Instant Release, which is different from the conventional pain killer tablets because of the unique instant release used to manufacture it. The instant release technology results in the active drug in Nimegesic IR getting released instantly in its molecular form leading to instant absorption and relief within minutes.
