OIL, RAPL team up for Assam gas cracker project

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
Guwahati, Oct 19: Oil India Limited (OIL) and Reliance Assam Petrochemicals Limited (RAPL), a subsidiary of the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), signed a gas supply agreement (GSA) for the Rs 4,000-crore Assam gas cracker project on Thursday.

The GSA was signed by OIL chairman-cum-managing director (CMD), BB Sarma and RIL executive director HR Meswani in the presence of Union petroleum minister Ram Naik and Union minister of state for water resources Mrs Bijoya Chakraborty. With the signing of the GSA, the deck has been cleared for construction of the project at the 1,000 acre site located at Lepetkata in Dibrugarh district of Assam.

As per the agreement OIL will supply 5 million cubic metres of hydro-carbon gas daily to the RAPL gas cracker project for the next 15 years from the day of commissioning of the project with a capacity to produce 2,00,000 tonnes ethylene per annum. The petroleum minister said the ball has been set rolling for implementation of the gas cracker project which is included in the assam accord. RIL executive director Mr Meswani said, on implementatiion of the project, one-third of the total requirement of gas for the gas cracker project would be met.

He hoped to sign a similar agreement with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) in near future to meet further requirement of gas for the project. The RIL executive director said the setting up of the gas cracker project would be a major boost for the growth of the petrochemical industry in the north-eastern region.
