PM admitted to Breach Candy for surgery

Our Political Bureau
Mumbai, Oct 9: The Breach Candy hospital in south Mumbai is fully prepared for the knee joint replacement surgery on Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Tuesday.

Apart from the union information technology minister Pramod Mahajan, those who will be present in the city on Tuesday are Union home minister LK Advani and principal secretary to the Prime Minister Brajesh Mishra.

Renowned orthopaedic surgeon Chittaranjan Ranawat, who arrived in the city on Sunday night, held a series of meetings with senior medical professionals, who will be assisting him during the surgery. He also met the team of doctors - Dr Farooq Udwadia, Dr Nandu Laud, Dr Harish Bhinde and anesthestist Dr SR Gupte, who will be assisting him during the operation on Tuesday morning.

Dr Ranawat also reviewed all the arrangements and the facilities at the hospital.

The entire seventh floor of the hospital will be used for the Prime Minister. The knee replacement operation would be conducted there itself and Mr Vajpayee would stay there for three to four days. He would later be shifted to Raj Bhavan, before he leaves for Delhi on October 20.

Earlier, Mr Vajpayee, who arrived here on Monday from Delhi, was admitted to the hospital. He was driven straight to the hospital after alighting from a special Indian Air Force aircraft that touched the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport around 4 pm on Monday.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the metropolis in view of the Prime Minister's stay in the city. The special protection group (SPG), in charge of the PM's security, had conducted a series of security drills, with the cops of the local protection branch last week. They have taken over the security around the hospital. The hospital has virtually turned into a fortress with armed guards constantly on the vigil.

The make-shift PMO at Sahyadri, the Maharashtra government's official guest house at Malabar Hill, will issue bulletin everyday on the Prime Minister's health and Mr Mahajan is scheduled to brief the media.
