GIS solutions to help improve agribusiness

Mumbai, Oct 9: Remote sensing technology is fast making inroads in the field of agriculture that in turn helps improve agribusiness as a whole.

According to Hyderabad-based AgriNet Solutions, there are two main applications of this technology: One, crop area and production estimation at national and specific regional level, and two, crop health monitoring and assessment of impact on production.

The range of remote sensing applications include generating resources information base, and monitoring changes in resource availability.

"Detecting changes can include monitoring crop stress at fortnightly intervals throughout the year, or changes in land use, soil salinity/alkalinity/water logging, cropping pattern or crop prodcutivity occuring through the years," said AgriNet's president S Thiruvendachari. Mr Thiruvendachari added, "We provide state-of-the-art remote sensing and GIS solutions to sustainable agriclutural management and agribusiness applications." AgriNet utilises geographic information system (GIS) applications to develop database and analysis capabilities of any selected area which can be utilised for customised application solutions covering market analysis. Among the services offered by AgriNet is farm explorer, which is useful to commercial and research farms and sugar cooperatives and agrobusiness companies' captive agriculture areas or the plantation estates.
