Australian share prices close lower

Sydney: Australian shares fell 0.6 per cent Monday as investors continued to cast an anxious eye towards US markets, brokers said.

The benchmark All Ordinaries index closed 18.6 points lower at 3,226.2, while the SP/ASX 200 fell 19.2 points to 3,274.3.

The All Industrials index shed 35.1 points to 5,616.3 points and the All Resources fell four points to 1,347 points.

National turnover was 348.3 million shares worth 1.07 billion dollars (572 million US). News Corp shares rose 11 cents to close at 22.55 dollars, after dropping to 21.69 dollars during early trading.

In the banking sector, most major stocks suffered falls, with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia shedding 23.2 cents to 27.564 dollars and the National Australia Bank losing 0.1 cents to 26.49 dollars.
