Bajaj Tempo to upgrade vehicles

Geeta Nair
Pune, Oct 4: The rough stretch of the road is coming to an end and it could be smooth ride from here. And for this, Abhay Firodia, the man behind the wheels and CMD of Bajaj Tempo, is banking heavily on the company's new product mix with the back-up of upgraded and modernised facilities. A Rs 693 turnover company, Bajaj Tempo, is expanding its tractor range. The company's Tempo Ox tractors is currently available in the 35 hp and 45 hp category and is now entering the the 25 hp and the 60 hp category. The 25 hp tractor is expected to roll out of the Akurdi plant during Q3. The company has also revamped its Excel range of LCVs to meet the Euro I and India 2000 norms and has re-launched the Excel.

New variants of the Tempo Tax have been introduced. Trax Judo is the upgraded machine with a stylised all metal body with Euro I compliance. After getting a foothold in Maharashtra, the three wheeler, Mindor, is finding its way to new markets in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh markets. The company has just completed a Rs 300 crore investment programme. Bajaj Tempo had been making losses for the last couple of years and one of the reasons for it was the limited product range. "During the last couple of years our focus has been on expanding the product range, upgradation and modernisation of the manufacturing facility, says Mr Firodia. "We are not just an assembling company so we had to invest resources and time in product designing, engineering and creating significant capacities", Mr Firodia adds.

Bajaj Tempo is steering clear of the top end of the market. "We will retain our utilitarian concept with emphasis on economy, fuel efficiency and ruggedness as our USP", he says. The semi-urban and rural markets will continue to be the focus. "

Around 90 per cent of out sale this year is coming from products that are less than five years old and this is a significant achievement," Mr Firodia says.

The modern tractors and the utilitarian three-wheeler Minidor are expected to contribute significantly in putting the company back on rails. Now with the product range in place, Bajaj Tempo is shifting gears to focus on marketing and distribution.
