ICICI, Sun Micro & Cidco plan incubation centre

ICICI Infotech, state-run City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) and Sun Microsystems have joined hands to set up an incubation centre at the international infotech park, Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The centre, which will begin operations from October 15 will be spread over an area covering 20,000 sq ft. Cidco general manager (special projects) S Thakar said that ICICI Infotech, an arm of the ICICI Ltd would make an investment of nearly Rs 20 crore, while Cidco has provided the space free of cost.

Sun Microsystems will provide the back end computing equipment and software at the centre. ICICI Infotech will undertake operational management of the centre and will provide the requisite technical and managerial mentoring to the selected start-ups. ICICI Infotech chairman KV Kamath after the formal launch of incubation centre on late Thursday evening said that it would pick up stakes in start ups which would go in for incubation at this centre. He added that the incubation centre would provide pre-venture capital support and an integrated world class facilities to Indian start ups.

Kamath said that the start-up could take benefit of the ready technology infrastructure at the incubation centre till they reach a stage of commercial viability. He added that the incubation centre was also expected to provide venture capitalists a platform to select incubated units for financing. Qualified ideas will be incubated for periods ranging between six months to two years depending on the requirements of start ups, he added. Anil Lakhina, Cidco vice-chairman and managing director said that this incubator in the joint sector was part of the multi-initiative plan to develop Navi Mumbai into a high power IT belt. Bhaskar Pramanik, managing director of Sun Microsystems said that its partnership with ICICI Infotech and Cidco was a major step forward in providing budding Indian e-businesses with world class technology and solutions.
