English veggies find a place in Chennaites' banana leaf

Anand Krishnamoorthy
Chennai, Aug 31: There is a new found enthusiasm for English vegetables from the gourmets of Chennai. Brocholi and Brussel sprouts are in demand. The other veggies available are white onion, red and yellow peppers, avacado, artichokes etc.

Brocholi and Brussel sprouts are priced at Rs 80 per kg. White onion is available at a resonable Rs 16 per kg. Avacados and artichokes cost about Rs 8 and Rs 12 per piece. Oyster mushrooms are available at Rs 90 per kg.Continental herbs such as thyme, rosemary, sage and parsley are available. They come in medium-sized packets that cost about Rs 25 each. Celery and leeks cost Rs 6 for a bunch.

According to the wholesalers of these vegetables in the city, the stocks of the English vegetables come in from the hill stations of Ooty and Kodaikanal. Supplies are also available from Bangalore. The availabilty from these centres is seasonal. The rainy season causes a shortfall of arrivals from the hill stations but Bangalore suppliers step in to fill the gap during the period. At times of severe shortfall their prices flare up upto double the current rates. But for most part of the year the price show only marginal variations.

While the exact quantum of these supplies coming into the city is difficult to estimate, they say that the supply has been steadily increasing. There are farmers who grow only select vegetables or herbs in Ooty and Kodaikanal.According to a city caterer who specialises in Continental cuisine, in general, there is a perceptible increase in enquiries and orders for European dishes. Also, fusion cuisine (which combines ingredients from differnt cuisines such as Continental and North Indian) is catching on. English vegetables are now being used in domestic cooking, although selectively. These factors could lead to increased demand for these veggies in the future.
