A house full of positive energy

HUMA SIDDIQUI
  • Is your business in the doldrums?
  • Are your debits more than your credits?
  • Do you feel that everyone, but you, is getting ahead at your workplace?
  • Are you anxious or tense?
The root of your problems may lie in an imbalance of `chi' in your life.

Feng Shui practitioners believe that an invisible breath of life called `chi' runs through all things, and that by maximising this energy, we can improve our lives. This involves arranging our surroundings in harmony with Feng Shui principles so that the energy works for you and not against you.Everything in your space, whether it is a cupboard or a painting or a plant or the colour of your upholstery, radiates energy. It has the power to influence your life in love and relationships, wealth, prosperity, fame, health, family, career, travel, knowledge and children.

Look at this example: A couple argued a lot, and could never understand why they quarrelled so much. A Feng Shui expert discerned that they had used palms to decorate their house. Palms have spiky leaves and cause energy to bounce off them in straight arrows, which create a sha chi (negative energy) environment. This was getting manifested as arguments between the couple. As soon as they replaced the palms with other plants, they found they started living in harmony.

Feng Shui is a study of such influences. It ensures that our lives have a healthy flow, say Ms Pallavi Bhartiya and Ms Renu Matharu. The placement of things in and around the house can greatly impact any result you want.Ms Bhartiya and Ms Matharu recently held a workshop on Feng Shui, called `Interiors and the Art of Living', under the aegis of The Empress Club for women and The Home Store.

According to them, every home - and office - has particular areas that pertain to the following sectors in a person's life:

  • Wealth and prosperity
  • Fame and reputation
  • Love and relationships
  • Children and creativity
  • Travel and helpful people
  • Career
  • Knowledge
  • Health and family
Disharmony in any of these areas can cause problems in the sector in which that area falls, says Ms Bhartiya. For instance, a toilet in the wealth area can cause all finances to be flushed away. The `flushing away' may come in the form of added expenses and debts, she explains.

A storeroom in the relationship area may cause arguments and tensions between husband and wife, daughter-in-law and mother-in-law, or any other persons in the family.

So how is Feng Shui different from Vaastu Shastra, which is so popular at the moment? "Vaastu Shastra is often referred to as Vedic Feng Shui. It is a parallel, equally qualified science of placement, but much older. It is based on observations made about relations between solar radiation and house forms. It lays down a complex set of guidelines for house construction. Feng Shui, on the other hand, is very practical and simple. Economical cures such as light, crystals, plants, paintings, colour, sound (wind chimes, for example) and moving objects are used here," explains Ms Bhartiya.

Shell, Citibank, British Airways and Hutchinson Telecom have used Feng Shui in their offices and benefted from feng shui, she claims.

Want to improve your chances of success?
    Do not sit

  • with an exposed bookcase behind you,
  • facing a staircase-whether the staircase is going up or down,
  • facing a toilet door-all the negative energy from the toilet will surround you,
  • facing a mirror. You will be easily distracted. The mirror also reflects sharp edges and other harmful structures that hit at you,
  • with water behind you-it could drown you,
  • with your back to the main door, and
  • directly under an air-conditioning vent.
