Monaco to hostcoffee meet in Oct

Our Bureau
Mumbai: A three-day World Speciality Coffee 2000 starts from October 13, 2000 at Monte Carlo, Monaco. Jointly organised by Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE) and DMG World Media (UK), the conference and exhibition is supported by the Speciality Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and will feature participation from the Speciality Coffee Association of Japan. The event is aimed at `taking' the European speciality coffee to the next stage, by helping its audience of retailers traders and roasters to produce better coffee and sell more of it.

Included in the list of subjects to be deliberated are: Coffee on the Internet; e-commerce and the Coffee Trade; ISO 9001: Why You Need It and How To Get It; Exploiting Coffee Bar Culture (in Japan, US, Italy and North Europe); Designing Blends For Young People; Importance of Water Quality in Espresso Coffee'; Espresso Panel: The Italian way, the American way and the Non-Traditional Way; Designing the Coffee Bar of the Future; Speciality Coffee In Restaurants; Organic presentation, The Future of Speciality: In USA, Europe and the Far East and Designing and Opening a Coffee House.

Meanwhile, on the home front, the filter coffee loving Chennaiites are being treated to Italian style of coffee at Qwicky's Pubs, thanks to Qwicky's coffee islands sprouting slowly in select retails partners, department stores, large book stores, theme parks and entertainment centres."Friazzo", "Teambra" and "Iglu" may no longer sound plain gibberish. These popular and other gourmet coffees from around the world are already becoming popular among the younger and the older generation alike, if one goes by Sashi Chimala, an NRI from US, who had sold off his electronics firm to return to his roots, as it were and set up Chimayo Chains, the master franchisee for Qwicky's Corp Although hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Sashi launched Qwiky's Coffee Pub here in October last year. By the end of this year, he will open 12 more, including another in Chennai on September 30, he said on the eve of the launch of Qwiky's "Coffee Island" in a major departmental store "Life Style" in Chennai last week.

Qwiky's, which has already proved to be a rage among the younger generation in Secunderabad, will open in Pondicherry on September 15. Qwiky's coffee will be "flowing" into Mumbai in the first-quarter of next year and then in Delhi and Pune. We also have enquiries from China. I am also looking for a joint venture in Colombo, Sashi said. Qwiky's is set to expand to 10-12 coffee pubs and ten coffee islands by the year end.
