Global tyre makers agree to set up online trading site

Frankfurt: Six global tyre makers on Friday signed a agreement to build a joint purchasing and procurement e-marketplace, called RubberNetwork.com, to cut costs and improve efficiencies, Continental AG said. The German tyremaker said that the RubberNetwork.com Internet site, which would be open to all tyre and rubber makers and suppliers, will be launched by end-2000.In addition to Continental, the e-marketplace will include Cooper Tire & Rubber, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Michelin, Pirelli and Sumitomo Rubber .

Plans to launch the e-marketplace were first announced in April. In addition to purchasing, procurement, rubbernetwork.com will also offer software and services to improve logistics in the tyre and rubber industry. Continental said the combined purchasing volume of the six members of the e-marketplace is more than $50bn. IBM-i2-Ariba will supply the technology for the RubberNetwork.com venture.
