Convergent Software gets second round of funding from Carlyle Group

Mini K Joseph
Convergent Software Ltd has received funding from Washington-based Carlyle Group, according to the company's managing director S Mani. However, he did not want to disclose the size of the fund.

Mani told eFE that this was the second round of funding. The company had received another sizeable amount from Citicorp in November last year in the first round. The fresh funds would be pumped into various expansion plans of the company both in India and overseas.

He said a portion of the fund would be invested in enhancing the company's personnel strength. Currently, the company has a strength of 70 and this would be increased to 200 by March 2001.

Convergent has plans to set up a development centre in Australia. Currently, the company does not have any onsite development centres overseas and the entire development was done offshore, he said. Convergent currently has a wholly-owned subsidiary in the US and marketing and sales offices in Singapore.

Mani said, the company would focus on telecom and e-commerce businesses.

Under telecom, the company handles protocol stacks for telecom, datacom projects, VoIPs, WAP-related solutions, billing and customer care systems and network management platforms. The company also assists its clients in building ASPs, payment gateways and web-enabled legacy systems. It has recently entered into tie-ups with BEA Systems, Sun Microsystems' iPlanet, Computer Associates, and Pramati Technology.
