Chennai, Aug 25: Daewoo Motors India Ltd (DMIL) on Friday said that it had the necessary facilities to offer Euro III compliant cars in the domestic market, as and when required. In case it was necessary to produce Euro III cars, the company would not increase the prices, DMIL chairman SG Awasthi told reporters."A majority of cars exported by DMIL are EURO III compliant. But to think about introducing the version in India now is hypothetical," he said.Awasthi opposed the import of second handcars into India, saying that it would harm the domestic car industry. Though he did not advocate a blanket ban on bringing second hand vehicles into the country, he opined that there should be some measures to regulate imports.Lack of regulation on import of used cars would encourage manufacturers abroad to make India a 'dumping ground' for cars with obsolete technology, he said.Referring to the introduction of two variants, SG and SA, he said that the new models, which were introduced after strong demands from consumers, had power steering and anti-theft systems.
However, those needing the power steering version would have to make do without power windows, he added. On the future of the automotive sector, Awasthi said that the product's life cycle in India was seven years, before which manufacturers should either bring out new models or offer upgraded versions. He said that DWIL, which presently had 250 service centres in 90 cities across the country, planned to open six more centres in South India next month. The ex-showroom price of the Matiz SG in Chennai was Rs 3.54 lakh and that of the Matiz SA, Rs 4.08 lakh. With the launch of these variants, DMIL would continue to offer four variants - SS, SD, SG and SA, he said. (PTI)WIL had exported about $100 million worth of cars, engines, gear boxes and other accessories from here, he added.(PTI)
