Kheladi.com to host online contests

Lalitha Srinivasan
In cyber space, the countdown for Olympics 2000 has begun. Cashing in on the Olympics fever, many Indian portals have launched special Olympic sections to woo the Netizens across the nation. Kheladi.com which was launched on July 20, 2000, has in fact created an entire package which includes 17 sections such as features, news, trivia and the history of Olympics, for the much-awaited sports event.

Says snooker champion Geet Sethi, who is the co-founder and managing director of Kheladi.com: ``We plan to host online contests for Olympics 2000 by next week. And the winners will get a chance to fly to Sydney to watch the mega event.'' The portal is all set to launch `Kheladi Gaming Zone' in September 2000. For starters, the zone will run online games like squash, memory and shooting games.

As part of its marketing strategy, the portal has initiated a co-branding exercise with Yahoo.com. ``We will be providing content for Yahoo.com. It will be possible to get a link to our Olympics section through Yahoo.com from August 25, 2000,'' informs Sethi.

The other promoters of the sportal are Cherag Ramakrishnan and Bhaskar Menon. ``Ours is the first Indian sportal which goes beyond cricket. We have positioned our portal as an all-encompassing Indian sports portal,'' claims Sethi.

In addition to kheladi.com, indya.com - a global horizontal portal promoted by Microland Group-has added another interactive new channel underwww.olympics.indya.com. Targeted at sports fans across the country, the new segment includes sections like `Great Olympic Moments & Great Indian and international Olympians'.

The special channel features photo galleries, insights on the Olympic 2000 aspirants, sports columns by leading sports celebrities, online games, quizzes and `Bhagwan Jaane Contests', informs indya.com chief executive officer Sunil Lulla. ``In addition to all this, users can keep track of the `Olympic Flame' through its journey from Greece to Sydney. One can read special features on Indian participants and get a complete schedule of the event too,'' adds Lulla. Indya.com currently offers 22 interactive services and products across entertainment, leisure, information, knowledge, utilities and services.
