New Delhi,Aug 24: A resolution against the corporatisation of the Department of Telecom Services (DTS) and the privatisation of National Long Distance (NLD) telecom services, is scheduled to be moved in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. The private memember business resolution, which will is being moved by VV Raghavan, states that "the Government's decision to corporatise the Department of Telecom Services (DTS) and the consequent disinvestment of MTNL and DTS; and to privatise NLD, will have its detrimental effects."According to the resolution, this will have an adverse effect on the development of telecom networks in rural and economically backward areas, and on the welfare of telecom officers, workers, and employees.
The resolution, which "urges the Government to retrace from the present policy," goes on to add that it will "create a serious problem in networking and carrying out anti-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and north eastern area."
However, Sanchar Bhawan officials are confident that the resolution will not have much impact: "Even if it is passed, at most, it will delay the process, but going back on this policy now is not possible." The officials also clarified that the Government will also not give in to the demand of the workers' union to corporatise the department through a Parliamentary statue: "The proposed-Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited will be incorporated under the Companies Act, because going through the Parliamentary route means that it still remains under Government control."
Meanwhile, telecom employees, across the country, went on a two-day strike, from Thursday, to protest against the move to corporatise the Department of Telecom Services (DTS). According to sources, the strike affected work on exchanges and it was particularly difficult to get through to mobile numbers. It was work as usual in Sanchar Bhawan. However, striking staff, demonstrated in front of the Central Telegraph Office and Kidwai Bhawan, in Delhi. The exchanges and administrative offices in Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, the north east, TN, and AP remained closed due to full participation.
