Lawrence Webb is managing director of Interact Commerce Corporation for the Asia Pacific region. He is responsible for managing the corporate strategy for the organisation's range of products - Interact.com, SalesLogix 2000 and Act! 2000 throughout the region. In an interview with Priya Srinivasan he explains what Interact.com is all about and its relevance to the current stage of the Internet evolution. What exactly is Interact.com?
Interact.com is an online subscription service that delivers a host of Web-based services into the applications and devices that sales professionals already use. It basically hotwires you to the Internet in the context that you want. The basic difference is that it uses XML (extensible markup language) instead of HTML (hyper text markup language) which makes it an interactive service. At the moment of course the information is totally America centric but that will change in the next six months or so when we have Indian information and service providers. To service our subscribers in the US, we have 19 partners who offer 42 services totally.
How do you expect Interact.com to fare in India?
At first I expect only professionals searching American databases to actually come on board but that will change gradually when we incorporate Indian content and services after which I expect the service to really pick up. More importantly, given that the mobile services seem to work better than the wired services in India, I expect that our ability to deliver output to mobile devices will work very well for us. At this point about 12 of the service providers that we have in the US could work in the Indian context as well.
How do you see Interact.com changing the nature of access devices?
At the moment I think Interact.com already eliminates the need for a laptop.
We combine the elements of a personal computer and a mobile phone. We enable the professional with a handheld device to stay connected to the Internet all the time. The use of Interact.com can be further optimised as handheld devices wit.
